Digital Citizenship Digital citizenship is based off of the use of technology. The purpose behind it is to create a safe and appropriate online experience for students when using the Internet. Once the students understand the basics it will carry on the rest of their lives and they can pass on their knowledge of online safety to others. There are several parts that come into play when discussing digital citizenship which involves security, self identity, information literacy, copyright, etc. All of those points are the basic yet extremely important rules and responsibilities for using technology. It's always the goal to be kind to others and following the rules in person so creating that same atmosphere online is ideal as well!

Teaching Students: |
I believe the best way students learn is through interaction. There are several sites that would be very fun and interactive that discuss just about everything dealing with digital citizenship but it would be hard to monitor those sites. I could open that up as the students are in class and have them explore the sites, then once they have had enough time we will come back together and they can discuss what they found out. Once all important key points have been discussed as a whole class I will instruct the students to create a skit on a video about any element of digital citizenship. We did this within our class this week and I thought it was a lot of fun yet informative about such an important topic.

Involving the family: |
As I discussed on my blog on digital citizenship, I found two cool links that are interactive for students, parents, and teachers. To introduce this topic I could send a short letter home explaining what digital citizenship is and how they can help their kids learn more. I believe once parents/guardians are aware of how important the negative and positive effects are, they will be more than willing to help their students engage on digital citizenship. On the flip side, there won't always be parents/guardians willing to help their kids so it is just as important for me to help the students succeed on learning all aspects of digital citizenship.

This is a quick glimpse of one of the interactive sites students can learn digital citizenship through, This also keeps parents and teachers involved in their learning as well.

This short YouTube video discusses 5 important facts that students should know from digital citizenship. I could implement this into my teaching by using this video as a conclusion. Once the class has created their skits and discusses as a whole collaboration, I can play this video and have the students add any facts they think are important for everyone to know!
