What did I know and what did I think about this topic before class? What am I curious about and would like to know about this topic?
I knew that there were several different devices that can be used within the classroom but I didn’t know how all of them worked specifically. I am curious to know how many different devices are really used within the classroom and at what ages. I would also like to know what the costs are of each device because that is a huge factor when considering what device to choose. It’s huge knowing the positives and negatives of each device before considering what one is right for my classroom or school.
What did I learn through my preparation for class?
When preparing for my class I learned all the features of the four main devices that are incorporated in the classroom. Those four devices include: Chromebooks, iPads, Laptops, and smartphones. I also learned what a 1:1 focus is in the schools; this means 1 device to 1 child. So every student should have their own device to be able to focus and learn on their own.
Additional resources that I found on this topic:I found this link
http://www.weareteachers.com/blogs/post/2015/04/03/10-rules-for-a-successful-one-to-one-classroom that talks about the 10 different rules for a successful 1:1 classroom. Some of the rules include: creating an online class, plan for student interactions and flipping your lessons. It’s a great article that discusses in depth the rules and how to add more excitement with rules for your 1:1 classroom.
Another link I found focuses on the reasoning behind 1:1 classrooms are effective. http://www.emergingedtech.com/2012/04/why-every-student-should-be-in-a-11-classroom/ this is important for teacher and school administrators still debating on whether or not devices are a good fit for their school. Throughout the article they explain the differentiation that 1:1 classrooms implement.
What did I learn in class this week on this topic? How did my understanding and thinking about the topic change through this process?
This week I learned a lot about the different features of each device. Chromebooks are strictly for surfing the web, it focuses on all online features. There aren’t any other applications to this device but it is a lot cheaper than the others. iPad’s are a good way of allowing interactive with the students, there are several apps as well as access to the internet for the students to learn from. iPad’s are expensive and not as cost effective as the Chromebook. I believe those are the two most applicable devices in an elementary school classroom because of the opportunity of learning it provides the children.
