What did I know and what did I think about this topic before class? What am I curious about and would like to know about this topic?
I knew that copyrighting was illegal and is absolutely not okay to do but I also knew that you could partake in “fair use” which allows teachers for example to copy some information strictly for the act of teaching students. When it comes to curation tools, I seem to be pretty familiar with some of those. Pinterest is a fun curation tool that I like to look at in my free time. I am still curious about how far copyrighting really goes. Does it forbid using any information on the internet or not? And where fair use comes in at that point.
What did I learn through my preparation for class?
I learned about the curation tools and how to use an important one like Evernote. That will be an extremely useful tool while still in college needing certain articles and as I become a teacher as well. I think it’s a great website!
Additional resources that I found on this topic
I looked at pinterest.com that is a big curation tool and it helps you organize things you like on different “boards”. It has all sorts of things on it for just about anyone.
I also found dipity.com and it’s a fun curation tool to organize a timeline for yourself. It includes different texts, fun videos, images; anything you would like on your timeline can pretty much go on there.
What did I learn in class this week on this topic?
This week in class I learned that you actually cannot watch full movies in class legally. Even if you bought the movie, for example; Finding Nemo because you wanted to teach a lesson on the ocean, you would not be able to play the full movie. You can play some of it but not all of it, legally.
How did my understanding and thinking about the topic change through this process?
My understanding widened about this topic. I thought I knew the basics of copyrighting and fair use but I learned quite a bit more information that I feel is very necessary to know especially as a teacher who will be teaching this topic to younger students. I didn’t know much about curation tools before discussing it in class but I’m glad we talked about it. I am very familiar with Pinterest but I wasn’t aware of it being a curation tool, but now that I know it is I think it’s awesome.
