What did I know and what did I think about this topic before class? What am I curious about and would like to know about this topic?
I don’t know much about personalized learning besides the title being somewhat self-explanatory. Personalizing the way of learning for yourself or your students. I do know it’s important when starting a year off with your students to get to know their needs to succeed in their learning. A challenge that many teachers may face is trying to equalize the time distributed to each student to find out their specific needs for learning but it’s a huge part of the success that comes later on to that student. So I am curious about, what the most efficient way to solving the answer of what personalized need every student has for his or her own learning? How to do you possibly adapt to every type of learning in one classroom? I’m curious to find the answer to these questions in class this week.
What did I learn through my preparation for class?
As I prepared for class this week I learned that personalized learning is a type of tailored curriculum and altered learning environments for students to meet their needs to result in success. Technology tends to play a big a factor in this type of learning. We were assigned to search and post a video that explains personalized learning in a different way, I found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6ieXLVCss4. This YouTube video discusses the purpose of personalized learning and how it is used. It also explains the other factors that surround personalize learning, such as: competency based learning – where students can proceed at their own pace or take their time (somewhat like discussed in the flipped classroom unit), letting learning happen anytime & anywhere – letting kids be adventurous learners and learn beyond what is only taught in a traditional school day, and the last factor is letting students take ownership of their learning – as a teacher you should make decisions with the students, always involve them.
Additional resources that I found on this topic:
I found this link, http://edglossary.org/personalized-learning/, it explains personalized learning and both sides of the opinion. Personalized learning is used to facilitate academic success of students by establishing what their needs require. The debate portion of this article pulls out important factors that go through everyone’s mind regarding personalized learning. Many say that personalized learning is a way of making it “easy” on the students without challenging their minds. I disagree; I think it’s about reaching the students needs by having them reach their full potential at the same time.
I found another link, https://insidetheclassroomoutsidethebox.wordpress.com/2013/11/24/take-aways-from-visiting-schools-implementing-personalized-learning/, this article shows the steps in implementing personalized learning as well as the positive outcomes that come from it. The visual displayed on this site is great for anyone who wants to understand the topic more.
What did I learn in class this week on this topic? How did my understanding and thinking about the topic change through this process?
I learned quite a bit about personalized learning in class this week. Personalized learning is a way of specifying the way of teaching to meet a student’s learning needs. There are several types of learners and it’s important to reach all the necessities of the way they retain information. Within a classroom there are students who are behind but scared to say so, there are students that are not being challenged because the curriculum is too easy for them, and there are students who’s needs are met perfectly, but that isn’t enough. Everyone needs to be reached equally. So in class we discussed ways to adapt to all different types of students and I learned how to begin the process of personalization. My understanding was clearer after this topic was discussed in class. I knew the basics of personalized learning but now I know how to approach it and use it in my own classroom.
